At Apple Arts Studios, innovation drives everything we do. Recently, our team undertook an exciting challenge: deploying a mobile OptiTrack motion capture setup on a cricket ground at BITS Pilani Goa in collaboration with Quidich Innovation Labs. The goal? To track real-time cricket ball movement with unmatched precision.

Taking Motion Capture Beyond the Studio

Unlike traditional studio mocap sessions, this was a large-scale outdoor project. We built a robust pipeline using OptiTrack PrimeX 22 cameras under stadium floodlights — engineered to track high-speed cricket deliveries with frame-perfect accuracy.

The Workflow

• 5:00 PM → Our crew began rigging the cricket field with multiple OptiTrack cameras.

• 5:30 PM → Calibration complete, outdoor capture stage ready.

• 5:30 PM – 12:00 Midnight → Capturing hours of authentic cricket shots, generating a comprehensive dataset for analysis.

The two-day session resulted in an extensive ball-tracking motion library for Quidich, offering data-rich insights for sports analytics, broadcast graphics, and beyond.

Overcoming Outdoor Mocap Challenges

Outdoor mocap isn’t standard in the industry — it requires meticulous planning, rugged hardware, and technical expertise. Despite challenges like low light, large capture volume, and long working hours, our system maintained uninterrupted, accurate tracking.
